Sawera Rafiq Awaits Open-Heart Surgery

Sawera Rafiq's Story

Sawera Rafiq, an 8-year-old girl from Bhakkar, has been struggling with breathlessness and chest discomfort since birth. Even mild to moderate physical activity causes cyanosis — a bluish skin color — and difficulty breathing. These symptoms have made everyday activities exhausting and painful for Sawera. Recently, her parents took her to a local hospital and consulted a doctor. After a series of tests and examinations, the doctor diagnosed Sawera with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). This condition affects the normal flow of blood through the heart and leads to low oxygen levels in the blood. The doctor has strongly recommended a Total Correction surgery to repair her heart defects. However, her family can’t afford her treatment.

Without this surgery, Sawera’s condition will continue to worsen, putting her life at serious risk. She will keep suffering from breathlessness and other symptoms associated with untreated TOF, including severe heart complications or even death.

Sawera lives in a humble mud house in Bhakkar. Her father is the sole breadwinner and works as a laborer, earning approximately PKR 38,000 per month. The family includes Sawera, her three siblings, and her parents. Despite his hard work, her father’s income barely covers their living expenses. They pay utility bills of about PKR 2,000 and educational expenses of PKR 1,000 for the children’s schooling. Sawera’s life-saving surgery is expensive, and their financial constraints make it impossible for them to pay for her treatment.

Sawera’s parents said with teary eyes:

“We watch Sawera struggle every day, and it breaks our hearts. We want nothing more than to see her healthy and happy like other children. With our limited means, this surgery remains out of reach. We humbly ask for your kindness and support to save our daughter’s life.”
