Azeem has a congenital heart defect. This condition needs to be fixed with cardiac surgery. If it goes untreated, it can damage his heart to the point of danger and result in several complications that can interfere with his daily activities like going to school or playing actively with other kids. Azeem Malik, a 14-year-old resident of Bahawalpur, has been suffering from shortness of breath, cyanosis, and repeated episodes of chest pain. His physical growth is also slow. His parents noticed his deteriorating health a few months ago and took him to the hospital. After a thorough evaluation and some diagnostic tests, the doctor diagnosed him with Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection with Pulmonary Hypertension. This can increase pulmonary artery blood pressure but usually doesn’t become severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The cardiac surgeon advised him to undergo Open Heart Surgery (Rerouting of Pulmonary vein to the left atrium). It is a surgical procedure that connects all the veins to the back of the left atrium. It helps maintain the pulmonary veins’ normal connection to the left atrium.

Azeem lives in a joint family with his parents and eight siblings. His father is the family’s sole provider, earning only PKR 30,000 per month. With this limited income, he is struggling to put food on the table. He has no savings, and his son’s heart ailment is putting a strain on his finances; therefore, he is unable to pay the surgical expenses. His father said in despair:

The cardiac surgeon advised him to undergo open-heart surgery (rerouting of the pulmonary vein to the left atrium). He was admitted to Ittefaq Hospital, Lahore, and Dr. Jamal performed his surgery successfully on 21-01-2023.
