Chanda Fatima, a 38-year-old resident of Khanewal, has been suffering from episodes of upper abdominal pain, vomiting, and indigestion for the past two months. She went to the local clinic for an initial check-up. The doctor prescribed some medicines to relieve the pain. However, she was not cured. She went to another hospital and underwent some diagnostic tests. Upon evaluation, she was diagnosed with gallstones. Their presence is called cholelithiasis. The doctor advised her to undergo an open cholecystectomy. It is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon makes a small incision in the abdomen below the ribs margin on the right side. The muscle and tissue are pulled back to reveal the liver and gallbladder, and then the gallbladder is removed.

She lives with her two children. She is a single mother and earns only PKR 30,000 per month as a daily wager, which is insufficient to cover the cost of her surgery. Chanda said in distress.
