Fifty-six years old Zubaida Bibi, a resident of Kati Ghari, Mardan has been enduring pain in chest and shortness of breath for the past five years. Upon consultation, she was prescribed symptomatic treatment but over time her condition only worsened. She went to the hospital and was assessed by a Cardiologist. After running a few diagnostic tests and evaluating the reports, the Cardiologist diagnosed Zubaida Bibi with Rheumatic Heart Disease. Rheumatic heart disease is a condition in which the heart valves have been permanently damaged by rheumatic fever. The heart valve damage may start shortly after untreated or under-treated streptococcal infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. The doctor advised her to undergo a Mitral Valve Replacement but unfortunately, the procedure is beyond her financial affordability. 

Zubaida’s son works as a laborer and earns a meager amount of money to support their family. He earns PKR. 10,000 a month and that is hardly enough to pay bills and put food on the table.  Zubaida’s son told us: 

“Seeing my mother going through this pain gives me that helpless feeling. A mother goes to every extent for their children and now when it’s my turn to pay back I can’t do anything for her. Please, whoever is reading this, please help my mother get better.”
