Enable Sonia to See Clearly with Cataract Surgery

Sonia Mai's Story
Sonia Mai, a 27-year-old woman from Khanewal, has been living in darkness for far too long. Once full of life and dreams, she now struggles with dimness of vision in both eyes. Her condition has made even simple tasks impossible. She can no longer move around without assistance, and even recognizing the faces of her loved ones has become difficult. Recently, Sonia consulted a doctor at a local hospital. After running some medical tests, the doctor diagnosed her with bilateral cataract—a condition that has severely impaired her vision. Her doctor has recommended (R) Phaco + IOL surgery as the first step to restoring her sight. However, the surgical cost is overwhelming for her family.
With each passing day, Sonia’s world grows darker. If she does not get the surgery, she may lose her vision permanently. She fears the day when she will no longer be able to see the faces of her loved ones at all.
Sonia belongs to a large but financially struggling family. She has four sisters and two brothers, and they all depend on her eldest brother. He works as a laborer, earning only PKR 28,000 per month. Despite his hard work, his income barely covers their household expenses, leaving no room for Sonia’s medical treatment. The family is heartbroken, knowing that her vision can be improved, yet they lack the means to help her. During this challenging time, Sonia contacted Transparent Hands and asked for assistance.
Sonia said in despair:
“I never imagined my world would turn into darkness at such a young age. Each day, I struggle to see, to move, to live. My family wants to help me, but they are unable to do so. Please don’t let me lose my sight forever.”
Sonia’s only hope lies in your kindness. Your generosity can give her back her sight, her independence, and her future.

Sonia Mai's Story
Sonia Mai, a 27-year-old woman from Khanewal, was suffering from blurry and dim vision. Simple tasks like walking independently, recognizing faces, or even navigating her home were almost impossible without help. This sudden loss of vision deeply affected her confidence and independence. Concerned for her well-being, Sonia visited a local hospital where a doctor performed several medical tests. After careful examination, she was diagnosed with bilateral cataract. The doctor recommended Phacoemulsification with Intraocular Lens (IOL) implantation for her right eye first. However, the cost of the recommended surgical procedure was beyond her family’s financial means.
She belongs to a large but low-income family. Sonia has four sisters and two brothers, and all of them depend on her eldest brother. He works hard as a laborer, earning just PKR 28,000 per month. This small amount is used to support the entire household, leaving nothing behind for medical expenses. Despite their efforts and prayers, Sonia’s family was unable to gather the money required for her surgery. During this time of need, Sonia reached out to Transparent Hands and asked for help. Moved by her plea, we registered her case.
With the help of generous donors, Sonia was admitted to the Bakhtawar Amin Memorial Hospital in Multan. On May 6, 2025, Dr. Hassan Raza performed his Right Eye Phaco + IOL surgery. The surgery went smoothly, and Sonia was discharged in stable condition.
Sonia described her emotions as follows:
“For a long time, my world was full of darkness and uncertainty. After this surgery, I feel like I’ve been given a second chance. I can see the world again, recognize faces, and move around without help. Thank you for bringing back the light in my life.”
Sonia’s life has changed since the surgery. She is now regaining her independence and happiness. Her family is immensely grateful to you, as your kindness and generosity made this life-changing procedure possible.
