Maliha Shehzadi's Story

Maliha Shehzadi, a 17-year-old girl from Lahore, has been suffering from pain in her upper right abdominal region for the past year. She experiences repeated episodes of nausea, vomiting, and indigestion, especially after fatty meals. This illness makes it difficult for her to focus on her studies. Recently, her parents took her to a nearby hospital and consulted a doctor. After performing an ultrasound scan and some necessary lab tests, the doctor diagnosed Maliha with Symptomatic Gallstones. It is characterized by the formation of hard mineral deposits that form in the gallbladder. To relieve her pain and discomfort, the doctor has advised a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is overwhelming for her family.

If her condition is left untreated, Maliha’s condition may worsen and lead to:

Acute cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder)

Biliary obstruction

Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

Sepsis

Maliha lives with her three family members in a modest home in Lahore. Her father works as a security guard and earns just PKR 35,000 per month. From this modest income, PKR 9,000 is spent on utility bills, and PKR 7,000 goes towards educational expenses for the children. With the remaining amount, the family struggles to cover food and other basic needs. Due to these financial constraints, her father is unable to save money for her surgery.
