Rehan Stepped into the World of Sounds

Muhammad Rehan's Story

Rehan, a 2-year-old innocent boy from Shadadkot, Sindh, was battling with his inability to hear the sounds around him since birth. Hearing his parents’ and siblings’ voices and the sounds of toys that make noise was beyond his abilities. Upon noticing his hearing impairment, his parents took him to a nearby hospital and consulted a doctor, who conducted some medical tests and diagnosed Rehan with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The doctor advised that cochlear implant surgery would be the only solution to enable him to hear and speak. However, the surgical cost was simply beyond Rehan’s family’s financial capacity.

For Rehan’s parents, ensuring their son could have this surgery was the biggest dream. However, despite their wish to give him the ability to hear, financial constraints made it impossible for them to afford the surgery. Rehan lives in a small mud house with a joint family of 11 members. His father, the sole breadwinner in the family, is a teacher and earns just PKR 20,000 per month. This meager monthly income covered their essentials only. A neighbor told them about Transparent Hands. Rehan’s family reached out to us and asked for assistance.

The day of hope arrived and Rehan was admitted to GIMS Hospital in Gambat. The surgery was scheduled for 29-07-2024. Dr. Maqbool Ahmed, an experienced surgeon, fitted the internal component of the cochlear implant. The surgery was a remarkable success and Rehan finally recovered. Just after one day of the surgery, his family celebrated his discharge from the hospital on 30-07-2024.

Six weeks after the surgery, the external component of the cochlear implant was installed for proper functioning. To navigate a new and vibrant world that was once beyond his reach, Rehan is receiving speech therapy sessions.

Rehan’s parents shared with the tears of joy:
