You Supported Mahnoor Fatima’s Cochlear Implant Surgery

Mahnoor Fatima, a 4-year-old girl from Sahiwal, had lived in a silent world since birth. Her parents noticed her unresponsiveness to sounds when she was one year old. Mahnoor never responded to her name being called and also faced difficulty in being understood by people. As she grew, she faced more challenges that came with her deafness. Her parents consulted a doctor, who after performing a thorough examination diagnosed Mahnoor with congenital sensorineural hearing loss. Mahnoor used to remain quiet and was losing touch with life. The doctor recommended cochlear implant surgery to enable her to hear.

However, Mahnoor’s family was not able to afford the expensive surgery. She lived in a rented house with her three family members. Her father is the sole provider for the family and earns just PKR 15000 per month. With his meager monthly income, he hardly managed the house rent, utility bills, and groceries. Due to their financial constraints, the surgical cost was overwhelming for them.
During her time of need, Transparent Hands stepped in to help Mahnoor and allowed her to explore the world of sounds.

On 27-07-2-24, Mahnoor was admitted to GIMS Hospital in Gambat. The surgery took place on 28-07-2024. Dr. Maqbool Ahmed, carefully inserted the internal component of the cochlear implant. Mahnoor recovered and was discharged just one day after the surgery.

The external component of the cochlear implant was installed six weeks after the surgery. Mahnoor now attends speech therapy programs which is another milestone in her successful recovery.
