Tawakkul In Islam: Meaning, Benefits And How To Practice It

Tawakkul meaning in islam

Tawakkul is a central concept in Islam. It means placing your trust and reliance completely in Allah (SWT). Tawakkul in Allah (SWT) sets a believer free. Tawakkul’s meanings are often misunderstood. However, there is a fine difference between sitting back and hoping for a miracle and actively putting your heart and mind to work to achieve certain goals with faith in Allah (SWT). The latter is Tawakkul, a key characteristic of a believer. The modern world is full of uncertainty that leads many of us to anxiety. However, if we develop Tawakkul in its essence, we will achieve greater harmony. Whether you or your loved ones face financial difficulties, health problems, or another personal struggle, practicing Tawakkul can lead to a complete transformation. In this article, we will discuss the Tawakkul meaning and power according to Shariah.

What Is The Meaning Of Tawakkul?

Tawakkul Meaning In Arabic

What is Tawakkul? is a question that people often ask. Tawakkul literally means trust or reliance in Allah (SWT). By practicing tawakkul, a believer entrusts Allah (SWT) with their affairs, knowing that no matter the consequences, Allah (SWT) will make the best decision for them. By developing and practicing Tawakkul, believers practically acknowledge Allah’s power over all matters. Also, Tawakkul is a practical admission of Allah’s (SWT) grace and kindness. Only He has the power to change matters. The Quran clearly states that:

“And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” (Surat Aţ-Ţalāq, 54:3)

The word Tawakkul is an Arabic term from the root letters waaw-kaaf-lam (و ك ل), meaning to assign a task or entrust an affair to someone. Simply, the word means delegating matters to someone you trust. Therefore, the term implies relying on someone more resourceful or powerful because the task might be too demanding for the one delegating it. When we apply this meaning to Allah (SWT), it makes perfect sense. The following Hadith beautifully explains the Islamic Tawakkul:

“Umar said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds: They go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, 4164)

What Does Tawakkul Mean In Islam?

Tawakkul is a very powerful idea in Islamic theology. It is complete, sincere trust and reliance on Allah (SWT), while using the means and blessings He has bestowed upon us. We must remember that Allah (SWT) has put human beings to a test that requires effort as well as faith. Believers cannot lack either. Expecting results without putting in the required effort is meaningless, and Islam discourages this approach. The following Hadith clearly tells us about expectation:

“Anas bin Malik narrated that a man said: “O Messenger of Allah! Shall I tie it and rely(upon Allah), or leave it loose and rely(upon Allah)?” He said: “Tie it and rely(upon Allah).” Other chains report similar narrations.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 2517)

Tawakkul vanquishes despair. It lives in the believer’s heart and keeps it away from darkness, even when their plans fail. That’s because Tawakkul teaches us that Allah (SWT) has the best plan for them.

What Does Tawakkul Mean In The Quran?

Tawakkul is a central theme in the Quran. It has been discussed many times. In the following Qurnic verse, Allah (SWT) asks the Prophet (ﷺ) to keep relying on Allah (SWT).

“So by mercy from Allah , [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah . Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].” (Surat ‘Āli `Imrān, 3:159)

In another instance, the Quran defines Tawakkul as a key attribute:

“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -” (Surat Al-‘Anfāl, 8:2)

Therefore, Tawakkul is one of the best attributes that a believer possesses. Remember that Allah (SWT) is Al-Alim (The All-Knowing), Al-Hakim (The All-Wise), and Al-Wakil (The Trustee, The Disposer of Affairs). Having Tawakkul in His powers is central to any Muslim’s faith.

Examples Of Tawakkul In Everyday Life

Sometimes believers have Tawakkul in Allah (SWT), but they fail to demonstrate it in testing times. That’s why praying for Tawakkul as a blessing is important. The following are some of the examples of Tawakkul from practical life situations:

  • A student studying diligently for their exam and praying to Allah (SWT) for success is Tawakkul. Praying to Allah (SWT) for success without any preparation isn’t Tawakkul.
  • A patient praying for recovery after seeking medical treatment is Tawakkul. Not seeking any help and expecting betterment isn’t Tawakkul.
  • A farmer planting seeds, watering their crops, tending to their land, and then relying on Allah (SWT) for the best yield is Tawakkul.
  • A job seeker updating their resume, applying for positions, preparing for interviews, and placing their trust in Allah (SWT) is Tawakkul. Expecting a job without preparation is just wishful thinking.
  • Parents raising their children with love, kindness, and a focus on Islamic ideals is Tawakkul.
  • An entrepreneur working hard to start a new business and making the most reasonable decisions in the process is Tawakkul.
  • A traveler making a journey after taking due precautions and making a Dua for protection is Tawakkul.

Benefits Of Tawakkul In Islam

The Importance of Tawakkul is undeniable. It also comes with many advantages. The following are some of the advantages of Tawakkul:

Greater Peace Of Mind

Placing your trust in Allah (SWT) means that you can rest your heart and stop worrying. This brings greater peace if mind and takes away worries and everyday anxiety.

Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: Those who have believed and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Surely, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest. The Quran defines that peaceful state of mind in the following verse:

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Surat Ar-Ra`d, 13:28)

Tawakkul is a path to this peace because it takes the burden of controlling what you cannot control.

Reduced Fear Of Uncertain Outcomes

Fear of uncertainty is one of the biggest reasons people feel anxious. A person with Tawakkul addresses this fear by affirming that only Allah (SWT) knows the future and He has the best in store for us.

Stronger Faith

By practicing Tawakkul, we strengthen our Iman in every possible way. Every time we rely on Allah (SWT) and see His plan unfold, our faith grows stronger. Once a believer starts recognizing Allah’s (SWT) will in every plan, their faith grows stronger.

Greater Patience

Tawakkul is central to Islamic spirituality. You become patient when you learn to trust Allah (SWT) with His plans. With patience, one acknowledges that a delay is not a denial, and Allah’s (SWT) wisdom is infinite in its nature. The following quote from Hazrat Yaqoob clearly states that:

“Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allah will bring them to me all together. Indeed it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.” (Surat Yūsuf, 12:82)

Emotional Resilience During Hardship

Human lives are full of trials. Certain disappointments and failures are inevitable. Those with Tawakkul deal with these challenges with remarkable strength. They may grieve like others, but they do not despair or lose hope.

Greater Dependence On Allah (SWT)

One of the greatest spiritual achievements a believer can achieve is complete dependence on Allah (SWT). It might take time and a lot of effort to reach that station, but it is one Allah’s (SWT) greatest blessings

How To Develop Tawakkul In Your Life

Tawakkul doesn’t happen overnight. It is a quality that must be nurtured and developed over time. Here are some practical steps that will help you learn how to practice Tawakkul:

The more you know about Shariah and its requirements, the closer you get to the expectations of Allah (SWT). So believers should devote time to learning about Islam.

Remember that Tawakkul requires action. Put in your best effort, learn from your failures, and keep trying with faith in Allah (SWT). Failures occur. It is part of the learning process. But never give up, despair, or doubt Allah (SWT )’s kind nature. If you repeatedly fail after Tawakkul, know that Allah (SWT) knows the best.

Keep praying regularly. Dua lies at the center of the Islamic faith. When you raise your hands and ask Allah (SWT) for your needs, Allah (SWT) acknowledges. The following Quranic verse clearly tells us that:

“And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein” (Surat Qāf, 50:16)

Always get hope from your past achievements. Such reflections build trust in Allah (SWT). Gratitude is the key to greater Tawakkul. Always remain thankful for your blessings.

Regularly recite Qur’anic verses about Tawakkul. Allah (SWT) tells us in the Quran:

“And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.” (Surat Aţ-Ţalāq, 65:3)

Conclusion

Tawakkul and faith are deeply connected. Tawakkul is trusting Allah (SWT) after doing your best. It is an essential trait that all believers must have. It teaches Muslims to take the appropriate means, seek Allah’s (SWT) help, and trust His wisdom for all kinds of outcomes.

When you achieve Tawakkul, you are blessed with a life of peace and spiritual strength. Achieving Tawakkul is spiritually one of the most liberating feelings a believer can have. All Muslims must strive for it every day with complete mindfulness.
