How Sadaqah Donations Promote Compassion, Cooperation, and Empathy in Ramadan?

Sadaqah Donation

Each year, Muslims welcome Ramadan and prepare for its profound spiritual offerings, which culminate in the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Ramadan is an exercise in piety. While believers strive to achieve personal piety through fasting and prayer, they also practice compassion, cooperation, and empathy toward the community. According to a report by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IU Indianapolis, American Muslims donated $1.8 billion in zakat to domestic and international causes in 2021. While many Muslims give their Zakat during Ramadan, they give Sadaqah in an effort to please Allah (SWT).

The Idea of Piety in Islam

Islam’s concept of righteousness and piety doesn’t depend on performing rituals. Worshipping Allah (SWT) is important, but providing financial assistance to deserving people is also paramount. There are two distinct sets of expectations from a believer: Haqooq Allah and Haqooq al-Ibaad. The idea of piety is incomplete without either of these. The following verse of the Quran explains:

“Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:177)

What is Sadaqah & How is it different from Zakat?

Many Muslims choose Ramadan as an ideal time to give Zakat, as it helps the community to keep fasts and observe the sacred month with dedication. Zakat, however, is a fundamental duty of every Muslim and therefore the third pillar of Islam. Sadaqah is distinct in that it allows believers to demonstrate their dedication to humanity and their love for Allah (SWT) by going beyond their basic duty to pay the annual Zakat. Sadaqah is a voluntary charity given out of kindness, with no expectation of material benefits. In many ways, Sadaqah epitomizes the essence of being a believer. Giving in the name of Allah (SWT) is the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, whose generosity knew no bounds, especially during Ramadan.

“Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was the most generous of all the people, and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel met him. Gabriel used to meet him every night of Ramadan to teach him the Qur’an. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was the most generous person, even more generous than the strong uncontrollable wind (in readiness and haste to do charitable deeds).” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6)

Why Give Sadaqah Donation?

A good life is the one shared with others. That’s why the concept of community welfare is important in Islam.

The following Quranic verses clearly instruct believers to spend in the way of Allah (SWT):

“And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:195).

The following Hadith tells us how Sadaqah can help believers succeed in the afterlife:

“Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard-pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother, and he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in the house among the houses of Allah (mosques) and recite the Book of Allah and they learn and teach the Qur’an (among themselves) there would descend upon them tranquility and mercy would cover them and the angels would surround them and Allah mentions them in the presence of those near Him, and he who is slow-paced in doing good deeds, his (high) lineage does not make him go ahead.” (Sahih Muslim 2699a)

How Sadaqah Donation Supports Community During Ramadan

According to the following Hadith, all Muslims are supposed to feel each other’s pain and act to rectify it accordingly.

“Nu’man bin Bashir (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever”. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].Riyad as-Salihin 224

The sense of togetherness increases during Ramadan as believers perform Salaat and fast together. While fasting is performed purely to please Allah (SWT), it allows believers to experience hunger and thirst. Thus, fasting helps many believers empathize with those who lack the resources to feed themselves well and regularly.

Sadaqah promotes collective responsibility, reminding believers that caring for those in need is a shared obligation of the entire community. During Ramadan, this spirit often brings families, mosques, and charitable organizations together, allowing resources to be pooled, providing support to those who might otherwise be overlooked.
