Al-Khair Foundation is a UK-based international NGO providing humanitarian support, international development, emergency aid and disaster relief in some of the world’s most deprived areas. Established in 2003 and rapidly growing into one of the leading Muslim charities in the UK, Al-Khair Foundation also looks to tackle issues prevalent in the UK as well, such as unemployment, education, women’s empowerment and domestic violence.
How They Started
Al-Khair Foundation (AKF) began with a school. In the Islamic tradition, which advocates that charity starts at home, they wanted to give back to their UK community first. And education was the best thing they knew to give.
How They Grew
Today, Al-Khair Foundation (AKF) is a UK-based Muslim charity, and although they’ve been engaged in charitable work from the outset, education was initially their key priority. After their UK schools proved to be a success, AKF started building schools overseas. Their focus was educating orphans and children from underprivileged communities. This led to their work with widows and vulnerable women, and then to the establishment of the AKF shelters. Eventually they launched their water aid and livelihood projects, as well as the Al-Khair Foundation medical aid programmes. 2005 became a turning point for us, when AKF rose to the challenge of providing emergency aid during the Kashmir Earthquake of that year. This was their first venture into the area of Overseas Disaster Relief. That October, and in the winter months which followed, AKF distributed food, shelter kits and medicine to survivors of the quake. Since then, AKF has undertaken emergency aid missions all over the world. Their support of the Haiti earthquake survivors was recognised by the United Nations in 2010. While during the Japan earthquake of 2011, they were the only UK Muslim charity working with survivors on the ground.

Humanitarian crises all over the world have led to millions of homeless people, refugees, and victims of natural disasters, wars and famines. Humanitarian aid is needed to save lives, reduce suffering and restore human dignity. Humanitarian aid gives materialistic support for a short time until the victims are given permanent support from the government or other authoritative institutions.
GHO 2018 over viewed that $25.4 billion is required to help the victims of the humanitarian crises globally. Until now only $ 8.7 billion of the required amount has been funded and $16.7 billion is unmet. Only 34.3 percent of the necessities have been covered so far which means majority of the victims are still in dire needs.
Both logistic and materialistic humanitarian aid is needed in the conflicted areas. During emergency and crises, we can witness the increase of deaths associated with pregnancy, reproductive health, sexual violence and sexual exploitation especially amongst the females. Women are blocked from getting family planning services, prenatal care and other basic health services. In the time of crises females are more vulnerable to diseases, violence and death because of no healthcare services and safety.
The delay in government and other institutional services can take away lives, cause severe malnutrition, and result in thousands of premature deaths due to severe injuries inflicted by violence, physical assault or other means. The humanitarian organizations give priority to speed and access so that they can reach the affected areas as fast as possible. Humanitarian organizations provide fast relief by distributing food-related items like grains, cereals, and agricultural equipment, water supply and sanitation, shelter and domestic items, medicines etc.
Often the conflicted areas become hard to penetrate due to security issues but the tenacity of the humanitarian workers and volunteers make it possible everyday to meet the needs of millions of victims in those areas. These organizations are keen to save lives because they understand the value of human lives and dignity. They risk their possessions and workers to save thousands of people from disgrace.
