A girl who aspires to become a teacher requires urgent heart surgery

Asifa Khan's Story

Asifa is a four years old girl who is studying in class one. She belongs to a small village of Noshehra. She has one sister and a brother. Asifa loves studying and in her free time, she plays with her little siblings. This small happy family has never seen sadness in their lives until a devastating news left them in agony.

Asifa was only 3 years old when she got high fever. Her nails and lips started turning blue. Her parents took her to a local hospital in an emergency and got her examined. The doctor told them to visit cardiologist immediately as her condition was serious. Asifa’s parents, who were extremely worried about her health, took her to a heart specialist who did her complete checkup and told them that Asifa has a hole in her heart which needs to be repaired soon otherwise it would further lead to many complications.

“She has a congenital birth defect and if not treated, her life will be at great risk”, says Asifa’s mother. Further Asifa’s mother narrated that Asifa feels difficulty in breathing and can’t even walk for a long distance. Asifa needs to undergo cardiac surgery but her poor father cannot afford to pay for surgical expenses. He owns a mechanic shop and hardly earns around 15,000 rupees per month which are not enough to pay hospital bills.

She was advised surgery to correct her defects and was admitted for preoperative work up in Ittefaq Hospital. She was found to have small defects in her heart and no evidence of damage because of these. So she was recommended expectant treatment resulting in closure of these defects on their own with regular follow up.
