Amina Shehzadi's Story

Amina Shehzadi, aged 15 years, a resident of Sheikhupura is diagnosed to have been suffering from Anorectal malformation (ARM) categorised as congenital recto-vestibular fistula (RVF). A recto-vaginal fistula is a type of ARM characterized by the abnormal connection of the rectum to the vagina. This results in the passage of gas or feces through the vagina as it leaks through the fistulous communication. Her parents took her to various hospitals but their time was only wasted. Finally when they were given a solution by the doctors, they realised that they lacked the financial resources for affording the treatment. Her ailment was to be corrected in a three stage surgical procedure. These surgical procedures were planned to be carried out over the period of a few months. A doctor referred them to Transparent Hands. They got her case registered and finally Amina’s journey towards a healthy life began.

Amina Shehzadi was first advised by her doctors to undergo a diversion colostomy in which Stoma was placed. Later, after a few months she underwent ASARP. This was her second surgical procedure where her back passage was constructed.  Now she is to undergo the third and final stage of her treatment that involves colostomy reversal. After this procedure she will hopefully lead a normal life. She narrates her tale in the following words:

“I was born with this condition. I was devastated. Soon my father got ill and became dependent on us too. Ever since then my younger brother and sister have been working in order to make ends meet. They collectively earn PKR.30,000 per month. From his salary we have to run the house, buy father’s medication and also provide for seven family members. In these circumstances it was never possible for my family to fund my surgery. It has been more than thirteen years since I have been suffering from this condition. It breaks my heart to see my family suffer because of me. Thankfully we got connected with Transparent Hands. My previous two surgeries were arranged by Transparent Hands. Now undergoing my third and final surgery at times leaves me anxious. But I am trying to focus on the future, where I see myself living a normal and healthy life.”

Amina Shehzadi awaits Colostomy closure. Luckily, Amina Shehzadi’s previous two surgeries have been made possible due to your donations to Transparent Hands.
