Mehmood Bacha's Story

15-year-old Mehmood has had frequent episodes of sore throat and fever for two consecutive years now. He could not swallow solid foods. Because of his throat ache, he could not sleep properly either. Initially, his parents thought that it was seasonal flu. But, after his symptoms became too repetitive, his parents took him to a local hospital to find out what was wrong with him. The doctor referred his case to an ENT specialist. On thorough examination, Mehmood was diagnosed with recurrent tonsillitis. The doctor advised a tonsillectomy for removal of his tonsils.

Mehmood’s father works in a mosque and earns a salary of 13,000 PKR per month only. He has six children and his wife is an HCV patient. There is hardly any money left at the end of the month after managing all the household expenses. It would take years for them to save money to be able to pay for the surgery. He wants his son’s misery to end but cannot really do anything about it.

“I am not blind to my son’s suffering. My heart breaks when I see his discomfort. But, I do not have any savings to fund the surgery. My wife is also unwell. It is a really hard time for my family.”– Mehmood’s father
