Muhammad Nawaz's Story

Nawaz, 49 years old, is suffering from a painful left inguinal hernia. For permanent relief from pain, he requires a left inguinal hernioplasty surgery. Nawaz has visited several local hospitals to get his surgery conducted at a cheaper price. Most of them turned him away due to the unavailability of an appointment. He has since then been enduring pain because he cannot afford to have the surgery at a private hospital.

“I have too many responsibilities and I cannot make my own health a priority. My brother is a heart patient and cannot work full time, so I am partially responsible for his family. My son is married and has two children but he isn’t well-off either, so I have to look after his family too. I do all that with the small pension I receive from my company and at the end of the day, there is not much left for me.” – M. Nawaz

Nawaz is a retired police officer and receives a monthly pension of 21,000 PKR. He spends most of this money taking care of his son’s and brother’s families and tries to cut back all of his own expenditures for their sake. Despite the worsening of his symptoms in the past year, he had not tried to get help solely due to financial limitations.
