53 years old Parveen Akhtar has been suffering from severe backache for the past 8 months. The pain was mild at first but gradually, it became unbearable. Now, the pain has driven Parveen Akhtar to the point where she is unable to stand on her two legs and needs painkiller injections frequently for short-term relief.
As all the other methods have failed in providing her with a permanent relief, the doctors have advised a decompression surgery – a type of surgery that is used to treat compressed nerves in the lower (lumbar) spine. The surgery is necessary to stabilize her lower back and prevent further deterioration.
Her husband is the sole earner of the family who hardly earns PKR 10,000 per month. The monthly income is barely enough to feed the family. With two children dependent on him, monthly rent and additional medical expenses, he is unable to afford the cost of surgery for his wife.

Parveen Akhtar's Story
Parveen Akhter, 53 years old, suffered from backache that radiated to her legs. On medical consultation, she was diagnosed with a prolapsed intervertebral disc (PIVD) and fractured fourth lumbar vertebra (L4). The doctors recommended decompression and spinal fixation for her. For this purpose, Parveen was admitted in Akram Medical Complex and her surgery was performed by Dr. Abrarullah Khan on 04.12.2020. Her L2 and L5 transpedicular screws fixation was done for the fractured L3 and L4 vertebra. She stayed in the hospital for six days and was discharged in a satisfactory condition. Parveen is regaining her strength through rest and feels better now.
