Surriya Begum's Story

49-year-old Surriya Begum has been diagnosed with a fibroid uterus because of which she has been experiencing constant bleeding and lower abdominal pain. The doctors have advised a total abdominal hysterectomy- surgical removal of the uterus and both ovaries- for permanent relief from the pain and bleeding.

Usually a very active woman, Surriya Begum has lately been confined to her bed because of the weakness induced by her condition. While the solution is just a simple surgery away, the associated costs are not manageable for her. Surriya has 8 children that she is responsible for. She works as a maid in 2 different places to earn a total of 4000 PKR/month. 3 of her sons also work at different shops and earn 5000 PKR, 7000 PKR and 4000 PKR on average. This brings the family’s total income to 20,000 PKR, which takes care of Surriya, her children and her husband, who has some added medical expenses due to frail health.

We cannot afford to lose even one income but I am afraid that I might soon be unable to work at all, seeing where my health is taking me. Surriya Begum, 49 years old, was suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding with pain for the last 1 year. She was diagnosed with a fibroid uterus and was advised hysterectomy surgery. Her procedure was done on 11-07-20 in Abid Hospital, by Dr. Sadaf Aqeel. She stayed for 3 days in the hospital and was discharged in good health.
