Zainab Afzaal's Story
“Life has never been easy for little Zainab. Coming from a poor background, she had to struggle to get rid of her disease and struggle to get a chance to study, to make new friends all because of poverty. Her financial background didn’t let her live a carefree childhood like her siblings. She remains upset all the time thinking that she’ll never return to normal life again. Help this innocent soul and let her fulfill her dreams before it is too late.”
Zainab Afzaal is an eight years old patient of recto-vestibular fistula. In this condition, an abnormal extension called a fistula exists in between the rectum and anal canal, causing discomfort and uncontrollable constipation. When Zainab was born, her condition was diagnosed but she did not have an immediate colostomy procedure for relief due to lack of resources.
Zainab Afzaal has two older sisters and two younger brothers. She lives with her siblings and parents in a small house in a joint family system. Her father is a laborer and earns around 15,000 PKR per month. As Zainab grew up, she started facing health issues such as discomfort, constipation, nausea, pain and vomiting. Her parents contacted many local hospitals but the cost of her treatment was too much for them to bear. As a last try, they contacted Transparent Hands for free surgery. Last year, she underwent a sigmoid loop colostomy procedure through TH, in which the colon was operated on to create a temporary passage. Now, she needs to undergo Anterior Sagittal Anorectoplasty which will give her permanent relief from her disease.
