Zareena Rasheed's Story
For the last 5 years, 36-year-old Zareena Rasheed had been suffering from a cough and pain in her throat. At first, these problems were mild but their severity increased over time. Upon consultation, the doctor advised her to get some tests. Per the reports, the doctor diagnosed her with a toxic MNG. Toxic MNF refers to the presence of multiple nodules in the thyroid gland, these nodules are responsible for imbalanced production of thyroid hormones which results in hyperthyroidism.
Seeing the results, the doctor has advised Zareena some medicines to control the disease and to prepare her for surgery. She is advised subtotal thyroidectomy as soon as her symptoms are controlled. Subtotal thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure in which the majority of the thyroid gland is removed. However, the surgeon leaves some part of thyroid tissue to achieve a normal thyroid function. Due to poor financial circumstances, Zareena was not able to afford the surgery. Now her condition has escalated to a point where she is unable to breathe, eat or drink properly. Immediate surgery is the only option of her complete recovery.
Zareena’s husband – the sole earner of the family works as a hawker and hardly earns PKR 10,000 per month. Her monthly income is barely enough to cover the household expenses and he is unable to bear the financial stress of his wife’s surgery.
“This disease has disrupted my entire life. I feel so lethargic all the time that even getting out of bed every morning is an arduous task for me. Life has become so difficult. I request you all to please help me get rid of this monstrosity so I can go back to living a normal life.” -Zareena Rasheed
