Zunaira Khalid's Story

“It was the worst day of my life. I had put Zunaira in her sleeping cot and was going about my usual household work. I was making evening tea for everyone. While I waited for the milk to boil, I left the room to finish some other chores. That is when I heard the milk pot crash to the floor and Zunaira screaming.”- Zunaira’s mother

Zunaira Khalid, now 7 years of age, was just 1 year old when she accidentally spilled boiling milk on her hands. She sustained severe burns on both hands. Zunaira was immediately rushed to the hospital, where the doctors administered first aid and painkillers. This wasn’t enough, however, to save the damaged skin. Slowly, the burned skin on both hands resulted in finger contracture- a condition in which the fingers curl up permanently due to tightened skin. For the past 6 years, Zunaira has difficulty in using both her hands. Her condition interferes with eating, writing, and most other everyday tasks. In order to release the contracture, she needs 2 plastic surgeries one after the other- a right-hand contracture release surgery followed by a left-hand contracture release surgery.

Plastic surgery costs run very high at private institutions. Zunaira’s father, Khalid Hussain, relies on a laborer’s wage of 15,000 PKR a month. A major portion of this is spent on the combined expenditures of a joint household of 22 members that Khalid lives in with his wife and daughter. At the end of the month, there is no money left to save. For that reason, Zunaira has not been able to receive medical attention for her condition for over half a decade.

“I still think back to the day and wish I had done something differently. I keep feeling like it is all my fault that my daughter’s life is so difficult. Her father and I wish to do everything in our power to help her but there is just no way for us to save up the large amount of money that her surgery would require.
