A cochlear implant could completely transform Marwan’s life. He will not be able to hear the world, which will hinder his education and social development. His silence has shattered his family. Five-year-old Marwan, a resident of Malakand, has been suffering from congenital sensorineural hearing loss. His parents first noticed something was wrong when he was one year old and wasn’t responding to their voices. They took him to the local hospital, where his tests were done. Upon consultation, he was diagnosed with sensorineural deafness. The doctor advised him to undergo cochlear implant surgery. To restore hearing, a cochlear implant uses electrical stimulation of the cochlear nerve. There are external and internal components to the implant. The external part is attached behind the ear. It processes the sounds with a microphone before sending them to the implant inside the ear.

Marwan lives in a big family of seven members. His father is the sole provider for the family and earns a monthly salary of PKR 15,000. Unfortunately, he cannot afford the surgery and is in dire need of financial assistance. His father expressed distress in the following words:

Three-year-old Muhammad Marwan, hailing from Malakand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been immersed in silence since birth due to congenital hearing loss. His inability to respond to sounds prompted medical tests, confirming this lifelong challenge. For Muhammad Marwan, the prospect of hearing lay within cochlear implant surgery. However, financial constraints stood as an insurmountable hurdle, preventing his family from accessing this crucial treatment.

Amidst this struggle, Muhammad Marwan's case reached Transparent Hands. Through the remarkable kindness of donors, a glimmer of hope emerged for him. This support paved the way for Muhammad Marwan to undergo life-altering cochlear implant surgery at Ali Medical Complex, Islamabad, on 12 October 2023. Dr. Jawwad Ahmed skillfully performed the surgery, installing the internal implant. His discharge the following day marked the commencement of his journey towards hearing restoration.

Muhammad Marwan embarked on a transformative journey towards sound. The upcoming installation of the external implant in six weeks, coupled with scheduled speech therapy sessions, aimed to gradually reintroduce him to the world of sound and language.
