Fourteen years old Rajab Ali, a resident of Attock, has been suffering from ear discharge and decreasing hearing ability since the age of ten. He was taken to an ENT specialist, the doctor ran some diagnostic tests. After the evaluation, Rajab was diagnosed with Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM). Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) results after perforation of tympanic membrane with persistent drainage from the middle ear for more than 2-6 weeks. To treat this condition, the doctor advised Rajab to undergo a Tympanoplasty as a lasting cure. Tympanoplasty is a surgery to repair the eardrum. The eardrum is a thin layer of tissue that vibrates in response to sound. This procedure is crucial for Rajab to get better as his hearing ability is deteriorating drastically. Unfortunately, the cost of this operation is beyond their affordability.

Rajab’s father works in a private company and earns just enough to meet the basic needs of the family. With a family of six to raise, it is impossible for him to bear the expense of this procedure. Rajab shared with us:

“I have been suffering from this for the last four years. It has affected the most important years of my life. I can’t go out in noisy places, I can’t understand anything in the school lessons. My hearing has been affected so much that it is also affecting me mentally and making me cranky.”
