Umaima Atif Can Hear Now
Umaima Atif's Story
Umaima Atif, a 2-year-old innocent girl from Sheikhupura, was suffering from congenital deafness. Umaima had never heard the laughter of other children and her mother’s lullabies. She couldn’t enjoy the simple pleasures of life due to her inability to hear. Her parents noticed her hearing impairment when she was one year old. They took her to a nearby hospital and received a consultation from a doctor, who after performing a thorough examination diagnosed Umaima with congenital sensorineural hearing loss. The doctor advised cochlear implant surgery that would allow her to hear different sounds around her.
Unfortunately, Umaima’s parents didn’t have enough money to pay for her surgery. They desperately wanted her to have this cochlear implant surgery so that she would never miss out on any opportunity to fully enjoy her life. Living in a small rented house, they were struggling to make ends meet. Umaima’s father is the sole provider for the family and his meager monthly income is not sufficient to even cover their house rent, utility bills, and other living expenses. During this challenging time, Umaima’s parents reached out to Transparent Hands and asked us for help. We promptly registered her case and the support of our donors enabled us to arrange surgery for Umaima.
On 26-07-2024, Umaima was admitted to GIMS Hospital in Gambat. The surgery took place on 29-07-2025 and Dr. Maqbool Ahmed carefully managed her case and inserted the internal component of the cochlear implant. After receiving post-operative care and recovering, Umaima was discharged from the hospital on 28-07-2024.
The external component of the cochlear implant was installed six weeks after the surgery. To achieve more milestones, Umaima is attending regular speech therapy sessions.
Umaima Atif’s parents said in happiness:
“It gave us immense pleasure when Umaima responded to our voices for the first time. You enabled our daughter to hear and speak. We can’t tell how happy we are. We are thankful for the support we received.”
Umaima is on her way to discovering different sounds and is learning new words to improve her communication. Her parents are extremely grateful to you as your contribution allowed their daughter to enter the world of sounds.
