Why Islam Encourages Regular Sadaqah Giving?

Charity lies at the heart of Islamic ethos. There are many reasons for Muslims to lead charitable lives. Not only does charity promise the best spiritual rewards in the afterlife, but it also allows believers to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ). Following the Qur’an helps Muslims understand Allah’s (SWT) consent and outlines a path to succeed in this world and the hereafter. To practically follow the word of Allah (SWT), Muslims follow the life and Sunnahs of the Prophet (ﷺ). By adopting the Sunnah, Muslims demonstrate their love and reverence for the Prophet (ﷺ), an integral part of the faith.
Giving Sadaqah is not only encouraged in the Qur’an but also in the Hadith. The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most charitable person. Following his way of life is a matter of honor and pride for Muslims; that’s one reason giving Sadaqah is central to the Islamic way of life. Not only does it help build a more equitable society, but it is also a sure way to please Allah (SWT) and succeed in the afterlife. Giving Sadaqah online is secure and convenient. Don’t wait too long to make your contributions.
Benefits of Regular Sadaqah Charity
The word Sadaqah is derived from ‘Sidq’, which means purity. Sadaqah comes from the purest of intentions. The giver of Sadaqah seeks neither material gain nor recognition. Sadaqah is given purely to please Allah (SWT). For Muslims, there is no better reward.
Rewards in the Afterlife
For believers, this world and its fleeting life have temporary value. It is a place of tribulation and an opportunity to succeed in the afterlife.
The Quran tells us:
“And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter – that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.” (Surat Al-`Ankabūt, 29:64)
That’s why believers remain focused on achieving success in the afterlife rather than the temporary, short-lived pleasures of material life. By making Sadaqah donations, we keep our focus on the afterlife and its endless rewards. The Qur’an tells us:
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:261)
In another verse, the Qur’an, reassures the believers about how Allah (SWT) will reward them for giving charity:
“Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan – it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.” (Surat Al-Ĥadīd, 57: 18)
Protection in the Afterlife
The following Hadith tells us how Allah (SWT) will grant protection to charitable believers on the day of judgement:
“Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, “Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His. They are: (1) a just ruler; (2) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (i.e. worship Allah (Alone) sincerely from his childhood), (3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosque (who offers the five compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque); (4) two persons who love each other only for Allah’s sake and they meet and part in Allah’s cause only; (5) a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for an illegal sexual intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah; (6) a person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity). (7) a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes get flooded with tears.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1423)
Allah (SWT) also recommends that believers give Sadaqah charity anonymously:
“If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and it will remove from you some of your misdeeds.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:271)
Sadaqah Increases Wealth
Allah’s (SWT) magnanimity is unlimited. Anyone who gives Sadaqah donations makes a significant investment in their afterlife. Sadaqah only increases a person’s spiritual ranks, honor, and spiritual blessings. The following Hadith clearly tells us that it doesn’t decrease wealth:
Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status. (Sahih Muslim, 2588)
Protection From Calamities
Human lives are full of challenges. It is only through Allah’s (SWT) blessings that humans overcome those challenges. Allah (SWT) is with believers who remain patient and steadfast. The Qur’an tells us:
“O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:153)
In difficult situations, one should remain patient and practise gratitude, but according to the following Hadith, giving Sadaqah can also help:
“‘Ali reported God’s messenger as saying, “Give the sadaqa without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.”*
Razln transmitted it.
* The idea is that it acts as a barrier beyond which calamity cannot pass.” (Mishkat al-Masabih, 1887)
Sadaqah Jariya: The Sadaqah That Keeps Giving
Our time in this world is limited. We shall all die, and with our death, our opportunity to earn spiritual rewards largely ends. The following verse from the Qur’an emphasizes the inevitability of death:
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion..” (Surah Al-Imran, 3:185)
While we are alive and in good health, we must spend our time and wealth building ways that yield continuous spiritual rewards, even after our departure. Sadaqah Jairyah allows us to do that. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When a man dies, all his good deeds come to an end except three: Ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous son who prays for him.” (Sunan an-Nasa’I, 3651)
Some of the ways of giving Sadaqah Jariya are as follows:
- Building Schools & mosques
- Distributing copies of the Qur’an
- Developing clean water reservoirs or other sources
- Supporting orphans
- Planting trees
- Teaching valuable skills
Non-monetary Form of Sadaqah
While giving monetary Sadaqah is highly recommended, remember that practising kindness and good morals is also a form of charity that believers must exercise.
Every act of kindness is sadaqah. Offering honest advice, good counselling, sharing knowledge, helping someone carry their belongings, visiting the sick, displacing harmful objects from a path, reconciling grieving parties, wishing someone well, and even smiling are Sadaqah.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Every joint of a person must perform a charity each day that the sun rises: to judge justly between two people is a charity. To help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity. And the good word is a charity. And every step that you take towards the prayer is a charity, and removing a harmful object from the road is a charity.” [Al-Bukhari] [Muslim] Hadith 26, 40 Hadith an-Nawawi
If Allah (SWT) has blessed you with resources, you must practise both forms of Sadaqah; however, if you aren’t wealthy, remember that Allah’s (SWT) kindness is limitless, and you can still earn great spiritual rewards by practising non-monetary forms of Sadaqah.
