Zakat is one of the fundamental requirements for Muslims. It is the third pillar of Islam and potentially an excellent form of philanthropy. Zakat is also closely aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Although it is very difficult to ascertain the exact amount of Zakat given by Muslims each year, a study conducted by the World Bank and IDB in 2016 estimated the amount to be between $200 billion and $1 trillion. Let’s see why Zakat is an integral practice in Islam, when it should be given, and how to calculate Zakat online.

What is Zakat?

The word Zakat literally means ‘to be clean’. By giving Zakat, Muslims ensure that their wealth becomes spiritually pure, and they contribute to creating a more equitable society.

It must be remembered that Islam strictly prohibits Muslims from using unlawful means to earn. Moreover,  Zakat is only applicable to wealth earned through rightful, Halal means.

What is Nisab?

Adult Muslims who have money equal to or more than the Nisab threshold must pay an annual Zakat of 2.5% of their possessions. According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the Nisab value for 2026 is Rs. 614,760. This means that any adult Muslim possessing an amount equal to or greater than PKR 614,760 must pay Zakat. Traditionally, however, Nisab is set at the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Note that the Hanafi school generally recommends calculating Zakat using silver standards.

One must not delay Zakat; some believers prefer to pay their Zakat during Ramadan. To accommodate this, you can give Zakat in advance. Rather than delaying Zakat, you can adjust your Zakat cycle by paying in advance for the coming year

What Zakat is Due On?

Why is Zakat Important?

By giving Zakat, a Muslim completely testifies to his faith and makes a lasting investment for his afterlife. For believers succeeding in the afterlife is more important than achieving success in this temporary world. The word Islam literally means submission or surrender to the will of Allah (SWT). By giving Zakat, a Muslim detaches from the world and practically follows Allah’s (SWT) will. Therefore, you should not miss out on your annual Zakat obligation. Zakat’s Importance According to the Qur’an & Hadith

The Qur’an clearly instructs believers to give Zakat:

“And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].” (Surat Al-Baqarah, 2:43)

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“If Allah gives a person wealth and he does not pay Zakah on it, his wealth will appear to him on the Day of Resurrection as a bald-headed Shuja‘a with two dots above its eyes.

It will take hold of the corners of his mouth on the Day of Resurrection and will say: ‘I am your wealth, I am your hoarded treasure.’ Then he recited this verse: ‘And let not those who covetously withhold of that which Allah has bestowed on them of His Bounty (wealth) and think that it is good for them (and so they do not pay the obligatory Zakah).”‘ (Sunan an-Nasa’I, 2482)
