Facts About the Three Portions of Qurbani Meat
It is customary to divide the Qurbani meat into three equal portions. One portion is distributed among the deserving individuals. Another is reserved for friends, neighbours, and relatives. The last portion of the meat is kept for personal consumption. While this recommendation is widely practised, there are no hard and fast rules that dictate the procedure. This means that one can distribute the entire Qurbani meat among deserving people. Many affluent Muslims who can afford to consume meat throughout the year opt to distribute all their Qurbani among deserving people. Similarly, it is permissible to consume a significant portion of the Qurbani meat. However, even in that case, one is asked to distribute at least some part of the sacrificial meat among the poor.
The Quran instructs that:
“And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah ; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.” (Surat Al-Ĥaj, 22:36)

There Is a Right Time For Conducting Eid ul Adha Qurbani
Qurbani should be conducted after the Eid prayers on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. It is not permissible to conduct Qurbani before the prayers. Any sacrifice made before the Eid prayer is counted as a Sadaqah, not as the obligatory Qurbani; if you do this, you must still perform the Qurbani after Eid prayer. According to a Hadith narrated by Jundab bin Sufyan Al-Bajali: I witnessed the Prophet (ﷺ) on the Day of Nahr. He said, “Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before offering the Eid prayer, should slaughter another sacrifice in its place; and whoever has not slaughtered their sacrifice yet, should slaughter now.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5562)
It is permissible to conduct Qurbani till the 12th of Dhul Hijjah. However, it is recommended to perform it on the first day, since it is the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ).
Eligibility For Conducting Qurbani
According to the Hanafi jurists, any adult, free, and sane Muslim possessing the Nisab value and/or having additional possessions beyond their basic requirements has an obligation to give Qurbani. However, Qurbani is not incumbent on travelers traveling during the Eid period. Anyone who qualifies to pay Zakat and meet those conditions must give Eid ul Adha Qurbani. According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the Nisab value for 2025 is Rs. 179,689. According to the Hanafi School, any Muslim who meets that condition should conduct Qurbani. That means that if more than one adult Muslims in a family meet the Nisab condition, they must all give Qurbani.
