Ume Habiba's Story

“My daughter used to be the most peaceful baby I had ever seen. One glance at her and it seemed that she does not have a worry in the world. Little did we know that she has been enduring as great a pain as she is. I have gone to a million hospitals in search of free surgery. I am at my wit’s end now. Please donate for Habiba’s cardiac procedure.” -Ume Habibas’s father.

Currently, seven years old Ume Habiba is a frail child. At a glance she looks just like a withered rose. Her mother tells us that unable to bear the pain, Ume Habiba has started crying a lot. Ume Habiba has been suffering from not one but three cardiac diseases. These diseases are interventricular septum (IVS), atrial septal defect (ASD) and Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). TGA is a congenital defect, in which the two main arteries of the heart are switched in position. Ume Habiba’s medical treatment went on for three years.

Now, to correct the congenital defect TGA, the cardiologist has advised Ume Habiba to undergo a senning procedure. The Senning procedure is an atrial switch heart operation to treat transposition of the great arteries.

Ume Habiba’s troubles do not end here. Her father is the sole earner of the family. He hardly earns PKR 8000 per month. Therefore, he cannot afford the hefty cost of his daughter’s cardiac procedures. He has circled back and forth to various local hospitals. But he has been unable to secure a date anywhere.

Ume Habiba's Story

Ume Habiba, aged 7 years, suffered from shortness of breath and cyanosis on mild exertion. She was also very weak and failed to gain sufficient weight. On medical consultation, she was diagnosed with multiple cardiac conditions including Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), Interventricular Septum (IVS) and Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). To fix these defects, the cardiologist advised surgical intervention. For this purpose, Ume Habiba was admitted to Ittefaq Hospital and her Senning procedure was performed by Dr. Asim Khan on 01.03.2021. She stayed in the hospital for fifteen days and was discharged in a stable condition. Ume Habiba’s health has improved a great deal since her surgery.
