Empower Rabia by Funding Her Mesh Hernioplasty
Rabia Hasan's Story
Meet Rabia Hasan, a 44-year-old woman from Karachi, who noticed a painful lump in her lower abdomen about a month ago. Only two months earlier she had undergone an elective C-section. The lump is located at the surgical site, and it has made the weeks after childbirth more difficult as she tries to look after her children. She consulted a doctor, who advised laboratory tests and an ultrasound scan. She was diagnosed with an incisional hernia, a bulge that appears when tissue pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall along a previous surgical scar. The doctor recommended mesh hernioplasty to repair the hernia and reinforce the wall with a mesh so the weakened scar is held firm. However, Rabia cannot afford the surgery. Without timely mesh hernioplasty, the painful lump will remain and may grow, and her pain will go on. She will keep facing each day with a hernia that has already begun to trouble her so soon after her C-section. Rabia is a housewife.
Her husband is the imam of their local mosque and receives a stipend of PKR 19,000 a month. He is the sole breadwinner for a family of seven: Rabia, her husband, and their five children. They live in one-room brick accommodation provided by the mosque and madrasa in Orangi Town. One child is in school with a monthly fee of PKR 1,600. Their daughters study at a madrasa, for which the combined fee is PKR 3,200 per month. In addition, utility bills amount to PKR 2,500. School, madrasa, and bills together already take a large share of the stipend. After these expenses and various household expenses, they cannot pay for surgery.
Rabia shared her heartfelt plea as follows:
“Every time I lift my little one I am afraid. A mother should not have to hide her pain from the people who need her most. I want to recover so I can be the mother they need. Please help me by supporting my life-changing surgery. I do not want my children to see me like this.”
A mesh hernioplasty can repair the hernia and help her take care of her children without facing health challenges.
