Heal Shayan’s Heart Defects with Cardiac Surgery

Muhammad Shayan, a 6-year-old boy from Mangha, District Mardan, KPK, has struggled with cyanosis and breathlessness since the day he was born. Even mild to moderate physical activity leaves him short of breath and with chest discomfort. That’s why activities that other children take for granted become exhausting for him. At a recent diagnostic evaluation, doctors found that he has transposition of the great arteries (TGA), an atrial septal defect (ASD), and mild left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO). In simple terms, the major vessels leaving his heart are connected in an abnormal way, there is an opening between the upper chambers of the heart, and flow out of the left ventricle is mildly restricted. The doctor has advised open-heart surgery for Senning Procedure. However, his family cannot afford the procedure. If this open-heart surgery is delayed, Shayan may face serious complications such as irreversible damage to the heart and lungs, stunted physical and cognitive development, and an increased risk of heart failure. These are potentially life-threatening complications that need to be addressed. Therefore, completing the planned treatment is important to protect his heart, ease the strain on his small body, and give him a stronger chance at a healthier childhood.

Shayan’s father, Sajjad Ullah, works as a laborer and earns only PKR 22,000 per month. He is the sole earning member for a household of thirteen people living in a modest home. Shayan has seven siblings, and the large family depends on this single modest income for every basic need. They already carry a loan of about PKR 130,000. After food and other essentials, nothing remains for the open-heart surgery their son urgently needs.

Shayan’s father asked for help in a quiet voice:

“My son has been fighting for every easy breath since the day he was born. When he tries to run or play like other children, his chest hurts, and his lips turn blue. I work as hard as I can, but I still cannot give him the surgery that can save his life. Kindly support my child so he can receive this life-saving treatment and grow up with hope.”
