For the last seven years, sixty-six years old Ulfat Bibi has been suffering from Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes the cartilage in the knee joint to thin out. In consequence, the surfaces of the joint become roughened, thus creating friction. As a result, the movement becomes painful, and the joint becomes stiff. Due to this condition, Ulfat is not able to get up or walk. Moreover, the pain has become unbearable for her.

Now, to treat this condition, the orthopaedic surgeon has advised Ulfat to undergo a total knee replacement surgery for her left knee. It is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability.

Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is beyond Ulfat’s affordability. Ulfat Bibi’s husband passed away many years ago. Thus, Ulfat Bibi is financially dependent on her son, who hardly earns PKR 25000 per month. With this income, he has to raise his own family as well. Therefore, he is in no position to bear the expense of his mother’s surgery. He told us:

Ulfat Bibi's Story

Ulfat Bibi, aged 66 years old, a resident of Lahore was suffering from severe left knee pain for 8 years. She went to the hospital and the doctor diagnosed her with severe osteoarthritis of her left knee. She was advised total knee replacement to get her mobility back. She was operated on 16-07-21. In this operation, her total knee replacement (TKR) was done at PSRD Hospital, by Dr. Javaid Iqbal. She had a swift post-operative surgery, and was discharged in a satisfactory condition after three days of hospital stay.
