Azizullah Chutial's Story

Azizullah Chutial, an 80-year-old man from Hyderabad, has been suffering from poor vision in his right eye for the past two years. Once able to move around freely and live an independent life, he now struggles with everyday tasks. Even recognizing faces or walking safely has become difficult for him. Worried about his worsening eyesight, Azizullah recently visited a hospital for a check-up. After a thorough medical examination, the doctor diagnosed him with a cataract in his right eye. A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye. To restore his vision, the doctor has advised Phaco + IOL surgery to restore his vision. However, the surgical cost is overwhelming for Azizullah.

If he does not undergo surgery soon, the cataract may worsen and lead to complete blindness in the affected eye. At his age, this would make his life even more difficult, increasing his dependence on others for simple daily needs.

Azizullah lives in a rented house with his joint family of 16 members. They pay PKR 10,000 for house rent and PKR 3500 for utility bills each month. His son is the only earning member and works as a security guard, earning just PKR 22,000 per month. After covering the basic needs of the household, they are left with nothing to save or spend on medical treatment.

Azizullah said in despair:

“My world is getting dark, and I feel helpless at this old age. I can’t see my children’s faces clearly anymore. Every step I take feels uncertain and unsafe.”
