Ruqayya Hameed's Story

Ruqayya Hameed, a 6-year-old girl from Karachi, has been living with a painful lump in her right groin for the past year. At first, her parents thought it might go away on its own, but with time, the lump grew larger and began causing intense discomfort. Activities that once gave her joy, like playing outside with her siblings, now leave her exhausted and in tears. When her parents finally took her to a hospital, the doctors diagnosed her with an inguinal hernia. It is a condition where a tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles, causing a visible bulge and significant pain. The doctor recommended herniotomy as the only solution to relieve her pain. However, her family can’t afford the surgery.

If Ruqayya does not undergo herniotomy, the hernia may continue to grow and cause severe pain and discomfort. It may lead to life-threatening complications like strangulation, where the blood supply to the tissue is cut off. Delaying treatment may also affect her growth and well-being.

Ruqayya’s father works as a security guard and earns a modest monthly income of PKR 25,000. He is the sole earner for a family of eight. With this limited income, he struggles to provide for his family’s basic needs. They live in a modest home and pay PKR 3000 for monthly utility bills. Moreover, the family is under the weight of a PKR 700,000 loan, which they are desperately trying to repay. Due to these financial challenges, affording Ruqayya’s surgery has become impossible for them.

Watching his daughter suffer every day has left her father heartbroken and helpless. He shared:

“Every night, I hear Ruqayya cry in pain. As a father, it breaks my heart that I can’t give her the much-needed relief. I’ve done all I can, but we’re already drowning in debt. I just want her to have a pain-free childhood. Kindly support my daughter’s surgery.”
