Gul Nargis's Story

Sixty-three years old Gul Narjis has been suffering from Osteoarthritis involving her left knee for the last five years. Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes the cartilage in the knee joint to thin out. In consequence, the surfaces of the joint become roughened, thus creating friction. As a result, the movement becomes painful, and the joint becomes stiff. Due to this condition, Gul is not able to get up or walk. Moreover, the pain has become unbearable for her.  

To treat this, the orthopedic surgeon has advised Gul to undergo a left total knee replacement surgery. It is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability. While the knee replacement seems like an easy solution to all of Gul’s problems, it is certainly not an accessible solution. Unfortunately, she cannot afford the hefty cost of this surgery. Gul’s husband is the sole earner of the family. He sells construction material and hardly earns PKR 50,000 per month. After monthly expenses, they do not have the means to arrange for surgery. Her son told us:

“I don’t even know who to ask for help anymore. I am at my wit’s end, hovering here and there in search of free surgery for my mother. Transparent Hands is our only hope.”
