Muhammad Muneeb's Story

1.2 years old Muhammad Muneeb had frequent episodes of high fever. His mother could also sense that he was weak and lacked energy. When this condition prevailed for a few months, Muneeb’s mother took him to a doctor. The doctor conducted a detailed examination and prescribed various tests for him. The echocardiogram test revealed that Muneeb had a large patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). PDA refers to an opening located between two major blood vessels leading from the heart. This opening, named as the ductus arteriosus, is a normal part of a baby’s circulatory system before birth. It usually closes soon after birth. But, this did not happen in Muneeb’s case. So, he is advised a procedure called PDA ligation which is a surgery performed for closure of this opening.

Muneeb’s family does not have the financial resources to pay for this surgery. His father is a plumber in Saudi Arabia and earns only PKR 20,000 per month. He went abroad one month before the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic so his work was severely affected and the family is facing serious financial difficulties. Muneeb’s family is currently supported by his uncles.

“I have three children to look after. My husband is out of country. I have no one to share my worries with. Muneeb’s suffering breaks my heart and I feel extremely helpless.”-Muneeb’s mother

Muhammad Muneeb's Story

Muhammad Muneeb, 1.2 years old, was weak since he was born. He also suffered from repeated episodes of chest infection. When his parents took him to the doctor, multiple tests were performed and he was diagnosed with a condition called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The doctors advised surgery for PDA ligation. For this purpose, Muneeb was admitted in University of Lahore Teaching Hospital and the procedure was performed by Dr. Asim Khan on 19.12.2020. His left thoracotomy was done and the abnormal connection was tied off. He stayed in the hospital for four days and was discharged in a stable condition. Muneeb is gradually recovering from his major surgery. The surgery was conducted with the support of Pakistan Children Heart foundation and other donors.
