Sumaira Akram's Story

For the past two years, 27-year-old Sumaira Akram from Narowal, Punjab, has been experiencing pain in her right hip joint. This condition started after a fall, which led to discomfort and an inability to bear weight and walk. Hoping for recovery, Sumaira received treatment at a local hospital where her hip was placed in a plaster cast. However, instead of healing, her condition continued to worsen. The pain became more intense with time, making it increasingly difficult for her to stand, walk, or move independently. Desperate for answers, she returned to the hospital for further evaluation. After conducting X-rays and other diagnostic investigations, the doctor diagnosed her with a right hip fracture that had failed to heal properly. To restore her mobility and relieve her pain, they have recommended a Right Total Hip Replacement surgery. If Sumaira does not undergo surgery, she may experience persistent pain, making it more challenging for her to stand, sit, and walk. The condition may worsen over time, leading to joint deformity and further cartilage damage.

Sumaira belongs to a struggling family of seven. Her father is unable to work due to his own health problems, leaving the responsibility of supporting the entire household on her brother’s shoulders. He works as a rickshaw driver and earns only PKR 25,000 per month. With utility bills totalling PKR 5000, educational expenses amounting to PKR 5000, and many other household expenses, the family struggles to make ends meet with this modest income. Given their financial situation, they can’t afford Sumaira’s much-needed surgery.

With tears in her eyes, Sumaira said: “Every day I struggle with pain. I don’t want to be a burden on others. My family cannot afford this surgery. Kindly support me and give me a chance to walk without pain again.”
