Atiya Khan's Story

Atiya Khan, a 27-year-old woman from Karachi, is 32 weeks pregnant and waiting to welcome her third child into the world. Like every mother, she dreams of holding her newborn safely in her arms. Behind this hope, Atiya is carrying a deep fear. Her previous two deliveries were done through C-sections, and the doctor has advised that this delivery must also be performed through a C-section to protect both her life and her baby’s life. Due to her previous two C-sections, attempting a normal delivery may place both the mother and baby at risk. A timely C-section is important to help ensure a safe delivery and prevent complications during childbirth.

Atiya lives with her husband, Mehboob Ur Rehman, and their children in Karachi. Her husband serves as an Imam and earns only PKR 30,000 per month. He is the only earning member of the household, and seven family members depend on this limited income. The family lives in a residence provided by the mosque administration. The family’s modest income is spent on food, utility bills of PKR 4000, children’s educational expenses of PKR 2000, and basic household needs. With no savings to depend on, Atiya’s husband feels helpless. He wants to protect his wife and unborn child, but his income is not enough to cover the cost of the surgery.

Atiya shared her pain in these words:

“I am expecting my third child, but because of my previous two C-sections, I know this delivery is risky. I want my baby to come into this world safely, but my family cannot afford the cost of the surgery. My husband works hard, but his income is only enough for our daily needs. I request you to help me.”
