Do you know that 246,300 newborn babies and 9,800 mothers die every year in Pakistan?

The joy of many families in Pakistan is buried when they are unable to provide pregnant women with safe deliveries through proper healthcare facilities. Life-changing surgical and medical care remains out of the reach of children who live in poverty, with many facing malnourishment, stunted growth, and preventable health problems. That’s why Transparent Hands is focusing on supporting underprivileged mothers and children in Pakistan by establishing a clinic-level Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Center in Korangi, Karachi.

Alarming Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) and Challenges

Women in low-income and vulnerable areas face numerous challenges in accessing quality healthcare services. Many areas lack adequate healthcare facilities, health education is often nonexistent, and many pregnant women give birth without the support of doctors and medical professionals.

  • In Pakistan, 32% of births take place in the absence of skilled health personnel.
  • More than 41% of women of reproductive age face anaemia.
  • The country registers over 190,000 stillbirths every year.
  • As a consequence, for every 100,000 live births, 155 Pakistani women die.

Many of these deaths can be prevented by making healthcare facilities available to pregnant women.

Health Issues Faced by Underprivileged Children

Neonatal care is also inaccessible to a large number of families, children are not vaccinated, and many are unable to receive pediatric consultations from doctors. Due to these gaps, many children die across Pakistan:

  • Mortality rate for children under the age of 5 years: 58.5 / 1,000 live births
  • Infant mortality rate: 50.1 / 1,000 live births

Poverty increases food insecurity in low-income communities and numerous children face malnutrition and stunted growth. Over 33% of children under the age of five years experienced stunted growth in Pakistan.

Transparent Hands’ Unique Solution to Address These Challenges

Transparent Hands has stepped up to bridge these gaps in access to maternal and child healthcare services. Since 2014, we’ve provided over 370,000 treatments to needy patients in Pakistan through free medical and surgical care. Our maternal and child health camps have successfully extended healing to more than 8,000 deserving mothers and children.

Now we are establishing a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Center in Korangi, Karachi. Through this initiative, we aim to provide the following core services:

  • OPD consultations (maternal health, child health, general primary care).
  • Antenatal and postnatal check-ups and follow-ups
  • Nutrition counselling, growth assessments, and immunization status checks
  • Consultations with pediatricians and gynaecologists
  • Dispensing medications through a pharmacy.
  • Structured health education sessions (nutrition, breastfeeding, newborn danger signs, vaccination awareness, etc.)
  • Ambulance services for deserving patients
  • Basic diagnostics:
    • CBC
    • Blood glucose (random/fasting)
    • Urine R/E (culture via referral if required)
    • Pregnancy test
    • LFT/RFT panels (basic)
    • Lipid profile (basic)
    • Hepatitis B/C screenings
    • Ultrasound scans
  • Referral to our panel hospitals for C-sections, emergency obstetric care, gynecological surgeries, and other procedures for eligible patients.

Shariah-Compliant Payment Structure

Through a Shariah-compliant assessment process, the deserving patients will receive need-based waivers. The percentage of the waiver depends on the severity of the financial hardships and constraints faced by the patients and their families. Those who are Zakat-eligible can get full waivers, while others may receive partial subsidies, depending on their financial status.

Impact

With our unique and impactful approach, we don’t leave underprivileged women in the middle of their journey to motherhood. We support pregnant women from start to finish, and even provide free neonatal and pediatric care to help children survive infancy and reach their development goals on time. Contribute to this initiative to save lives, uplift communities, and secure Pakistan’s future.

Cost

  • Construction and fit-out (excluding land): PKR 55 million
  • Core equipment and setup: PKR 43 million
  • Total cost (excluding land purchase): PKR 98 million
