Rida Kashif's Story

One-month-old Rida Kashif, a resident of Karachi, is a frail child. She was experiencing difficulties during breastfeeding. Her parents took her to the hospital. The doctor advised her to take the ECHO test. After the results came, the doctor diagnosed her with truncus arteriosus, a birth defect of the heart. It occurs when the blood vessel coming out of the heart in the developing baby fails to separate completely during development, leaving a connection between the aorta and pulmonary artery. After the diagnosis, the doctor prescribed Pulmonary Artery Banding (PAB). Pulmonary Artery Banding (PAB) is a surgical technique used for the palliation of certain congenital cardiac defects. The most common indication is for the limitation of pulmonary blood flow in the clinical scenario of pulmonary over circulation caused by large left-to-right shunts.

Unfortunately, Rida’s parents cannot afford the hefty cost of this procedure. Rida’s father works as a mechanic and hardly earns PKR 27,500 per month. With rent and daily household expenses, he is in no position to arrange for his daughter’s procedures. He told us:

“Her birth left me with a strange feeling. Her heart problem eclipsed the happiness I wanted to experience at my daughter’s birth. No child her age should suffer this way. Please help us.”
