Shamshad Ali's Story

Shamshad Ali, a 50-year-old man from Gujranwala, experienced a fluid discharge from his ears as a child and his ability to hear declined. He received symptomatic treatment for the condition. Over time, his condition became worse and he completely lost his ability to hear. Upon consultation with an audiologist, Shamshad was diagnosed with post-lingual deafness, a type of hearing loss that occurs after a person has acquired speech and language. The doctor recommended cochlear implant surgery to restore his hearing. However, the overwhelming cost of the surgery was beyond his financial reach.

Performing everyday tasks became challenging for Shamshad, as his hearing loss reduced his ability to respond to sounds and negatively affected his independence and quality of life. He lives in a modest house with his wife and four children. Shamshad, the sole breadwinner in the family, works in a general store and earns just PKR 13000 monthly. With four children to support, covering the utility bills and living expenses was challenging for him, and Shamshad was hardly making ends meet.

During this challenging time, Shamshad’s family reached out to Transparent Hands and we registered his case. 

The day of surgery arrived. On 5th April 2024, Shamshad was admitted to Evercare Hospital Lahore. He was taken to the Operation Theatre and Dr. Maqbool Ahmed performed the procedure. During the operation, it was identified that he had unusual adhesions in his middle ear cavity due to an ongoing infection. So, his cochlear implant surgery could not proceed. For this reason, the procedure was abandoned. He stayed for two days in the hospital and received postoperative care and medications. He was discharged on medications and regular follow-ups.
