Waqas Ahmed's Story

Waqas Ahmed, a 4-year-old boy from Larkana, had lived in a silent world since birth. Waqas was unable to listen to his parent’s comforting voices and the laughter of other children. While growing up, he was losing connection with his surroundings. He struggled to communicate even his basic needs and his parents were heartbroken to see him. They noticed his hearing impairment when he was one year old. They took him to a nearby hospital and consulted a doctor, who performed a thorough examination and diagnosed Waqas with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL).

The doctor recommended cochlear implant surgery as the solution. Unfortunately, the surgical cost was far beyond Waqas’s family’s financial capacity. Waqas lived in a rented mud house with his three family members. His father works as a daily wage laborer and earns just PKR 25,000 monthly. With the burden of house rent, utility bills, and other living expenses, affording the expensive surgery was impossible for Waqas’s family.

After struggling for a while, Waqas’s family learned about Transparent Hands. They reached out to us and asked us for help. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Waqas was able to get the surgery on time.

On 28-07-2024, Waqas was admitted to GIMS Hospital in Gambat. On 29-07-2024, his surgery was performed by an experienced surgeon, Dr. Maqbool. He carefully fitted the internal component of the cochlear implant device. Following surgery, Waqas finally recovered. He was hospitalized for two days and he received essential post-operative care and monitoring.

Six weeks after the surgery, the external component of the cochlear implant was carefully fitted and installed. Waqas is now attending regular speech therapy sessions to improve his communication and hearing.

Waqas’s parents expressed their gratitude as follows:

“We can’t describe the happiness we felt when Waqas turned his head in response to our voices for the first time. His transformation is nothing short of a miracle. You helped us in our time of need.”

Waqas is now discovering various sounds. He can now play and grow like other kids without missing out on opportunities due to his congenital deafness.

This surgery couldn’t have been possible without the support of generous donors like you. You brought a significant difference in Waqas’s life.
