Twenty-eight years old Anum hails from a small town near Lahore. For the last six years, Anum has been suffering from severe pain in the hip joints. After consultation and further investigation, Anum found out that she has AVN of the right hip and Osteoarthritis of the left hip. Avascular necrosis is the death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply. Also called osteonecrosis, it can lead to tiny breaks in the bone and the bone’s eventual collapse. In Osteoarthritis, protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time and causes friction and pain.

Anum’s left hip is more affected than her right hip. To treat this condition, the doctor has advised Anum to undergo hip replacement surgery for her left hip. Unfortunately, Anum or her father cannot afford the hefty cost of hip replacement surgery. Anum is unmarried and currently working as a private school teacher. She hardly earns PKR 15000 per month. Due to her father’s unemployment, Anum has to provide for the household. Therefore, she is in no position to arrange for her surgery. She told us:

“I have always seen myself as a caregiver. But at the end of the day when I am in my bed with aching hips, I wonder who will care for me when I am bedridden. It scares me to non limits.”
