Khawara Nawaz's Story
Khawara Nawaz, aged 10, a resident of Mandibahuddin is diagnosed to have been suffering from anorectal malformation (ARM) categorized by congenital recto-vestibular fistula. A congenital recto-vaginal fistula is a rare type of ARM characterized by the abnormal connection of the rectum to the vagina. This results in the passage of gas or feces through the vagina as it leaks through the fistula. Khawara Nawaz will undergo Colostomy in which Stoma will be placed followed by construction of back passage. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints and loss of her father’s life, Khawara has suffered from her congenital condition for the past ten years. Her mother shares her daughter’s agony as follows:
“My daughter was born with this condition. I was devastated. Soon her father got ill and passed away. Ever since then I have been working as a house help in various homes in order to make ends meet. The money I make is not enough to help my daughter. I earn PKR.15,000 per month. I have rent to pay and provide for my mother-in-law and three children including Khawara. It has been ten years, since she has been suffering from this condition. It breaks my heart to see her going through this tormenting disorder. She asks me so many questions, sometimes I try to console her. Many times I have nothing to offer except for silence and tears. She has grown weaker and silent. Her state worries me. ”

Khawara Nawaz's Story
Khawara Nawaz, aged 10 years, suffered from discharge of fecal contents through her genital orifice since birth. On medical consultation, she was diagnosed with an anorectal malformation called rectovestibular fistula. The doctor advised her to get a colostomy stoma made before definitive surgery for rectovestibular fistula. For this reason, Khawara was admitted to Akram Medical Complex and the colostomy was performed by Dr. M. Bilal Mirza on 23.04.2021. She stayed in the hospital for two days and was discharged in a satisfactory condition. Khawara’s road to recovery has started since she has undergone first stage out of three corrective surgeries.
