“It started off as a dull pain but in the past couple of months, it has become unbearable. I am hardly able to work at my job. My family survives on the daily wages my brothers and I earn. If even one of us doesn’t earn in a day, it becomes hard to put food on the table for everyone. So I cannot afford to be sick. But I cannot afford my own treatment either. It is a really difficult situation to deal with.” – Fayyaz Ahmed

A few months ago, Fayyaz Ahmed, 27 years old, started experiencing nausea and severe pain in his groin on the right side. He has also been experiencing pain during urination. Upon checkup, his doctor discovered that he has kidney stones. Fayyaz requires a right pyelolithotomy- a surgical procedure in which stones are removed from the kidney. If left untreated, the stones could seriously damage his kidney.

Fayyaz earns 10,000 PKR every month working as a laborer. He lives with 10 other family members that include his parents, 2 elder brothers and their families. He and his brothers, all laborers, contribute all of their wages to the household expenses every month. Most months, it is hard for the family to get by, even with three earning hands. In such circumstances, they are unable to afford the expenses of Fayyaz’s surgery.

Fayyaz Ahmed's Story

Fayyaz Ahmed, 27 years of age, was suffering from right loin pain due to renal stones for the last few months. He was advised surgery to get rid of the stones and relieve his pain. His surgery was done at Noor Medicare Hospital, Rawalpindi, by Dr. Faisal Zaeem, on 24-02-20. His right pyelolithotomy was done and stones were retrieved. Fayyaz stayed for two days in the hospital. His recovery was complete and he was discharged symptom-free.
