Since we cannot afford to get her hospitalized in a room with AC, we have no choice but to keep her at home, in a room as hot as an oven. It breaks my heart to watch her toss and turn in discomfort all night.” – Malaika’s mother

Malaika Bibi, 8 years old, is suffering from chronic tonsillitis, a condition in which the tonsils in the throat get infected and inflamed again and again. Initially, she only presented with a slight burning in the throat, but with the passage of time, the pain turned worse and she started to experience other related symptoms including fever, pain in throat, and difficulty in swallowing food. Her parents took her to a pediatrician who recommended her to undergo surgical removal of the tonsils, or a tonsillectomy, as a permanent solution. Without surgery, her condition will only deteriorate further.

Even though their daughter is in pain, Malaika’s parents cannot opt for her surgery because they cannot pay for the surgical costs. Apart from her, they have 6 other children to support on a monthly earning of just 12,000 PKR. They struggled to have her treated at local hospitals but no facility is willing to accommodate them in the current pandemic situation.
