Ilsa Bilawal, a 2.5-years-old resident of Vehari, has been suffering from cyanosis and breathlessness since birth. Her parents took her to the hospital and the doctor advised some basic tests and X-rays. After seeing the results, the doctor diagnosed her with complex congenital heart disease (CHD) involving Double-inlet left ventricle (DILV), Transposition of the great arteries (TGA), and Univentricular heart (UVH). She was previously operated for resuscitation pulmonary artery bending (PAB). These are very uncommon congenital heart defects. Now, the doctor has advised angiography to proceed for open heart surgery with CP shunt procedure.

The doctors have made it clear that the only way to permanently cure Ilsa’s ailment is open heart surgery with a CP shunt placement. But, unfortunately, Ilsa’s parents cannot afford the hefty cost of the surgery. Ilsa’s father is the sole earner in the family. He works as a laborer and hardly manages to earn PKR 25,000 per month. With this income, he cannot arrange for his daughter’s surgery. He told us:

“My daughter is very small but still she is strong. She is fighting this deadly heart disease at such a young age. But it breaks my heart to see her losing this fight. She needs this life-saving surgery, but I can’t afford it. I am unable to play my part in this fight. I feel like I’m the most unfortunate father in the world. I request you to help us.”

Ilsa Bilawal's Story

Two-and-a-half-year-old Ilsa, a resident of Vehari, was born with a congenital cardiac defect. She had been experiencing cyanosis and breathlessness. Upon consultation, she was diagnosed with Transposition of Great Arteries with Double Inlet Left Ventricle. She underwent open-heart surgery at the age of four months with PA bending and PDA ligation to improve her health. During her follow-up visits, she was considered for the next surgery. She was advised to undergo Angiography followed by a re-do open-heart surgery for CP Shunt. Therefore, she was sent to Ittefaq Hospital and her angiography was performed on 07-04-2022 by Dr. Masood Sadiq. The report of angiography was not in favor of any further surgery. She was kept under observation for two days and discharged with medical advice.
