You Filled Mehrwa Zahid’s World with Sounds

Mehrwa Zahid, a 2-year-old girl from Sialkot, had been suffering from congenital deafness. Mehrwa’s world was silent and she faced difficulty in communicating with her loved ones. Her parents were worried about her condition, and they took her to a nearby hospital and consulted a doctor. After conducting some medical tests, her doctor gave them the shocking news that Mehrwa had sensorineural hearing loss. To unlock the world of sounds for her, the doctor advised cochlear implant surgery. This news filled her parents’ hearts with concerns as the cost of the surgery was far beyond their reach.

Mehrwa lived in a two-room brick house with her six family members. Mehrwa’s father passed away a few years ago, and her uncle financially supports the family. Mehrwa’s mother worked as a seamstress and earned just PKR 10,000 monthly. Her family was surviving in extreme poverty and they hardly managed to cover their essentials. The financial strain of her surgery put an additional burden on them, leaving them in a desperate situation. After struggling for a while, Mehrwa’s mother found Transparent Hands, contacted us, and asked us for help. After listening to her concerns, we promptly registered her case.

On 2nd October 2024, Mehrwa was admitted to GIMS Hospital in Gambat. Her surgery was scheduled for the following day, 3rd October 2024. Dr. Maqbool Ahmed carefully inserted the internal component of the cochlear implant, giving Mehrwa new hope in life. Mehrwa was hospitalized for two days and received post-operative care. On 4th October 2024, Mehrwa was discharged in satisfactory condition from the hospital.

Six weeks after the surgery, the external component of the cochlear implant was installed. To fully explore the world around her, Mehrwa receives speech therapy sessions. Mehrwa’s mother said with teary eyes:

“I never thought I’d feel such happiness again. Seeing my daughter responding to my voice fills my heart with satisfaction and I can’t describe it in words. She can now live her life to the fullest. We thank you for supporting Mehrwa and giving her the ability to hear.”

After the successful surgery, Mehrwa can now fully engage with others and eventually thrive in life without any hindrances. Her family is incredibly grateful to you for making a meaningful difference in her life.
