Muhammad Hasnain Ul Haq, a 20-year-old man from Karachi, has been suffering from a painful swelling in his left groin for the past year. As the swelling has gradually increased in size, it has become painful and makes it difficult for him to carry out his daily activities. Concerned about his condition, he visited a doctor, who advised him to undergo laboratory investigations and an ultrasound scan. After reviewing the reports, the doctor diagnosed him with a left inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall, causing a visible bulge and discomfort. To treat his condition and prevent further complications, the doctor has recommended mesh hernioplasty. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is beyond his family’s financial means. If Hasnain does not receive the surgery soon, his condition may lead to serious complications such as a strangulated hernia, where the blood supply to the intestine is cut off. This may cause severe pain, infection, and potentially life-threatening damage to his intestines, requiring emergency surgery.
Hasnain is currently unemployed and depends entirely on his father, who works as a rickshaw driver and earns only PKR 40,000 per month. He is the sole earning member of the family and supports his wife, Hasnain, and their younger daughter, while the family’s two elder daughters are married. The family lives in a rented house and pays PKR 15,000 for monthly rent along with approximately PKR 6,000 for utility bills. After meeting these essential expenses, they have no means to afford the cost of Hasnain’s surgery.
Hasnain said in despair:
“Living with this pain has made my life difficult. I want to recover but my family cannot afford this surgery. My father works hard to provide for us, yet his income is only enough to meet our basic needs. Kindly help me undergo this much-needed surgery.”
