Urooj Fatima's Story

Urooj Fatima, a 2-year-old girl from Hyderabad, has been living with a congenital hip condition since birth that has left her unable to bear weight on her left foot. Concerned about her health, her mother consulted a nearby doctor. After conducting the necessary examinations and X-rays, the doctor diagnosed Urooj with left-sided Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), a condition where the hip joint does not form properly, causing a limping gait and difficulty walking. To correct the alignment of her hip and enable her to walk normally, the doctor has recommended a Salter Osteotomy, a surgical procedure that repositions the hip joint. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is beyond her family’s financial means. Without timely surgery, Urooj’s condition may continue to worsen. The improperly formed hip joint can lead to chronic pain, a permanent limp, and early-onset arthritis. If left untreated, she may face lifelong mobility challenges that could affect her ability to walk, play, and have a normal life.

Urooj’s parents are separated, and her father does not provide financial support for the family. Urooj lives with her mother and two sisters in a modest mud house owned by her grandfather. Her mother is a housewife and is currently staying at her father’s home. Urooj’s maternal uncle is the sole breadwinner for both his own family and Urooj’s family. He works as a daily-wage laborer and earns only PKR 30,000 per month, which is barely enough to support nine family members. With monthly utility bills of PKR 1,000 and other basic expenses, there is nothing left to afford Urooj’s surgery.

Urooj’s mother shared her heartfelt plea as follows:

“My daughter has never been able to walk properly since she was born. Watching her struggle to move while other children her age run and play is heartbreaking. Our family has very little income, and we cannot afford the surgery she desperately needs. Kindly help my little girl so she can walk without pain and enjoy her childhood.”
