Riaz Begum's Story

Riaz Begum, a 70-year-old woman from Sahiwal, is suffering from blurry and dim vision. This makes it extremely challenging for her to carry out daily activities. Moreover, activities like walking around her home and climbing stairs have become difficult for her. She often bumps into things while walking. Concerned about her deteriorating eyesight, she visited a doctor for a thorough evaluation. After undergoing careful examination, she was diagnosed with bilateral cataract, a condition in which the natural lens of the eyes becomes cloudy. Her left eye is more affected than the right one. To restore her sight and improve her quality of life, the doctor advised Left Eye Phacoemulsification (Phaco) and Intraocular Lens (IOL) surgery. However, her family can’t afford her treatment. If left untreated, the cataract may lead to severe vision impairment or even permanent blindness. It will badly affect her independence and well-being.

Riaz Begum lives with her husband and a son in a rented home. Her husband works as a security guard, earning just PKR 18,000 per month. Their household expenses, including rent and utilities, are supported by their son. Their financial constraints have made it impossible for Riaz to receive timely treatment. Riaz shared her concern as follows:

“At this old age, I just want to spend the remaining years of my life in peace. However, my eyesight is deteriorating day by day, and I am unable to see clearly. We are facing immense financial hardships and cannot afford the surgery. I need your support for my treatment.”
