Maham Tahir's Story

Maham Tahir, a 16-year-old girl from Toba Tek Singh, has been suffering from serious health problems since birth. She experiences shortness of breath and chest discomfort, even during mild physical activity. This condition makes it difficult for her to carry out daily activities. Concerned about her worsening health, her family consulted a doctor at a local hospital. After detailed diagnostic testing, the doctor diagnosed Maham with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV), severe Aortic Stenosis (AS), and mild Aortic Regurgitation (AR). These heart issues restrict blood flow and place extra strain on her heart. The doctor has recommended ROSS open-heart surgery. Unfortunately, the cost of the surgery is far beyond her family’s financial means. Without the recommended surgery, Maham’s condition may continue to worsen, putting her at risk of severe heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms, fainting episodes, and other potentially life-threatening complications.

Timely treatment is essential to improve her heart function. Maham lives with her parents and two siblings in a government quarter in Toba Tek Singh. Her father is the family’s sole earning member and serves as an Army soldier, earning PKR 45,000 per month. This modest income is used to support the entire household, including educational expenses of PKR 6000, utility bills of PKR 3500, and other essential needs. Due to their financial hardships, affording Maham’s life-saving heart surgery is impossible for the family.
